Goods in Transit Insurance & Liability Policy

At BDS Movers Ltd, we take every reasonable precaution to protect your belongings during packing, transport, and delivery. However, as with all transport services, certain risks may exist. This policy explains our liability and the insurance options available to you.


1. Our Standard Liability Cover

BDS Movers Ltd operates in accordance with New Zealand transport and consumer laws.

Unless additional insurance is arranged, our services are provided under limited carrier liability. This means:

  • We are responsible for loss or damage only where it is caused by our proven negligence.

  • Compensation may be limited to repair or replacement value, not sentimental value.

  • Certain items may not be covered under standard liability (see exclusions below).

We recommend customers consider additional protection for valuable items.


2. Goods in Transit Insurance (Recommended)

For your peace of mind, BDS Movers offers optional Goods in Transit Insurance.

This insurance provides broader protection than standard carrier liability and may cover:

  • Accidental damage during transport

  • Loss due to unforeseen events

  • Damage caused by fire, collision, or theft

  • Breakage during loading or unloading

The cost of insurance depends on the declared value of goods being moved.

To arrange coverage:

  • You must declare the full replacement value of your goods before the move date.

  • Insurance must be confirmed prior to transport.


3. Customer Responsibilities

To ensure proper protection, customers must:

  • Declare any high-value or fragile items

  • Accurately list items being transported

  • Secure personal valuables such as jewellery, cash, passports, and documents separately

  • Inform us of any pre-existing damage

Failure to disclose valuable or fragile items may affect insurance claims.


4. Items Not Covered

The following items are generally excluded unless specifically agreed in writing:

  • Cash, jewellery, precious metals

  • Important documents (passports, certificates)

  • Perishable goods

  • Plants and livestock

  • Hazardous materials

  • Items packed by the customer (unless damage is clearly caused by transport negligence)

  • Mechanical or electrical malfunction not caused by transport damage

We recommend transporting personal valuables separately.


5. Claims Procedure

If loss or damage occurs:

  1. Notify BDS Movers immediately upon delivery.

  2. Provide written notice within 7 days.

  3. Submit supporting evidence (photos, inventory list, proof of value).

  4. Allow inspection if required.

Failure to notify within the required timeframe may affect claim eligibility.

All claims are assessed fairly and in accordance with applicable New Zealand laws and agreed service terms.


6. Limitation of Liability

Where no additional insurance has been arranged:

  • Liability may be limited to the cost of repair or current market value.

  • Compensation will not exceed reasonable replacement value.

  • Sentimental or emotional value cannot be compensated.

BDS Movers Ltd is not liable for delays caused by weather, traffic, road closures, natural disasters, or circumstances beyond reasonable control.


7. Storage Insurance

If goods are placed into storage arranged by BDS Movers:

  • Separate storage insurance may apply.

  • Long-term storage requires declared value coverage.

  • Customers are encouraged to confirm insurance details prior to storage commencement.


8. Independent Insurance Option

Customers may also arrange their own insurance through a personal insurer.
If doing so, it is your responsibility to confirm that the policy covers removal services.
